Fun ideas on how you can help

Making a difference right here in our community!

You, your family, your company, your church, your school, Girl Scout troops, or any other organization you are involved in can collect any of the items listed on the "Supplies Needed" page. You don't have to get everything on the list. For example, we are always looking for new or gently used backpacks. Just supply that if you can. (Check out some garage sales)! Give us a call, or e-mail, after you have made your collection and we can come and pick them up.

Last year, one family did this for us and I thought it was a great idea. Instead of having a grab bag for Christmas, (with gifts you really don't need or want), pool your money together and purchase some backpacks and fill them up with some of the items on the "Supplies Needed" list. It is fun to shop for others. Plus, it can be a fun family time, (along with pizza and ice cream), to pack the backpacks together.

Have a garage sale or a car wash. Use part of the proceeds and go shopping! You can purchase backpacks and fill them with supplies.

Go to garage sales. If you see backpacks, tell them what you are doing. Sometimes they will give you the backpacks or sell them very inexpensively.

Make it a classroom project at your child's school. One school had left over "room party" money and went out and bought supplies. They invited us to their "packing the backpacks" party at the end of the year. Another resourceful teacher had her classes go through items that some students "threw away" during locker clean up day. It took her class all day to go through and sort all the usable binders, folders, pens, pencils, etc.

Girl Scout troops can help by making those "no sew" scarves out of fleece or by sewing small (10 x 10 size) pillows.

Churches and youth groups love to gather their resources and help collect items needed. I have been amazed with the amount of donations that come in from these groups.

Sign up to be on my e-mail list. I will let you know the days we are packing backpacks and going to the nursing home to sew pillows. If you can come to Hanover Park, come join us! We can always use the help!

Since we deliver to the shelters 4 times a year – January, April, July, & October – you can collect items at any time. This is an on-going project, so we will get your items delivered during the end of one of those months above.

"I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."
